Director’s Notes
I first encountered The Penelopiad when it was presented at The Citadel Theatre in 2013. I loved the concept of the show, telling this small ‘behind the scenes’ part of The Odyssey, about Odysseus’ wife and the tragedy of her maids. I loved the fact that it was a story about women told by women in all the roles. I loved the imagery of weaving your fate and trying to outwit with the strengths we are born with not just mere physical strength. It was not only a script I loved, but also one that I knew would challenge me as it was filled with music (but not a musical), and choral speech, and time and places that sharply switched. It also needed to be told with humour and sensitivity.
I submitted the show in the Spring of 2020 and it was approved for Walterdale’s 2020-2021 season the day before we shut down. At the time I did not think the shutdown would affect the season, but as we all know, it did. I joked, “Was this another way the universe was silencing a woman’s story?” It obviously did not make it onstage that season, and when the call came for the 2022-2023 season I resubmitted it and once again it was selected. My thanks to both Artistic Directors, Monica Roberts and Lauren Tamke, for selecting it and recognizing how well suited it was for Walterdale.
There have been other roadblocks, casting, a cancelled flight, a bout with Covid for me, various flus and laryngitis amongst the cast and I thought, “Nevertheless, she persisted!” I fortunately worked with a cast and creative team who believed strongly in the meaning of the story – that it tells the story of those whose story has been truncated and ignored – and that our job is to finally give it a voice. I hope you like what we have chosen to say, and I hope you reflect on other stories that have been ignored and forgotten.
Thank you for coming,
Kristen M. Finlay, Director
Summary |
---|
“And what did I amount to, once the official version gained ground? An edifying legend. A stick used to beat other women with. Why couldn’t they be as considerate, as trustworthy, as all-suffering as I had been? That was the line they took, the singers, the yarn-spinners. Don’t follow my example! I want to scream in your ears—yes, yours!” The Penelopiad is a contemporary take on one of the oldest epic adventure tales in existence. Still relevant today, it places Penelope, wife of the fabled Odysseus, at centre stage to share her perspective of her husband’s journey and her life and death as a legend. Sometimes comical, but deeply moving, The Penelopiad reflects on the depth and power of the female experience. |

Sarah Wilson – Helen/ Maid (Chloris)

This is Sarah’s first time on Walterdale’s stage and she is so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to perform with such a beautiful cast of women. She has previously appeared in shows at the University of Alberta in the ABBEDMAN and New Works Festival
Katy Yachimec-Farries – Odysseus/Maid

A Brief History of Walterdale Theatre and Building
Walterdale is one of the longest running community theatres in Canada.
Walterdale Theatre Associates traces its beginnings to Theatre Associates, who produced their first plays (Lady Audley’s Secret and Out of the Frying Pan) in August 1958, playing in the Jubilee Auditorium social room. Before finding its home in the current Fire Hall, there have been two other Walterdale Theatres. The first was an old school on the Walterdale flats (Kinsmen Fieldhouse area), hence our name. The second was a former service men’s club house, which was later demolished for Kingsway Garden Mall.
Our current building was built in 1910 and was Strathcona Fire Hall #1. In 1912 it was re-numbered Edmonton #6 when the City of Strathcona amalgamated with the City of Edmonton. The bell tower houses the Strathcona “Town Bell”. It is topped by an octagonal belfry, covered by an octagonal roof. The tower was used to dry hoses (by hanging them up) after use. The stable (now set-building workshop) was designed to house nine horses.
The building ceased to be a working Fire Hall in 1954 and was used to store furniture. In 1974 Walterdale Theatre Associates took over the building and lovingly restored it, and converted the inside to a 145-seat theatre. The first play produced in this theatre was What the Butler Saw by Joe Orton, which opened November 12, 1974.
Major renovations were again carried out in 1993 (raising the roof and tying the building together with new beams) and in 2011 (new main floor washrooms, renewing the bricks and other major outside work).
Walterdale continues to keep our building updated and efficient, and have replaced the lighting instruments with LED lights, and the aging second floor furnaces with new high-efficiency units.
