Director’s Notes
Shows that take me on a trip into the past intrigue me. The Golden Age of Radio is one of those interesting times of days gone by, when you would gather around a big beautiful wood grain radio with family, waiting for your favourite show to air. Everyone would be glued to the radio anticipating what would happen next, listening to the actors who would change their voices to give you new characters to imagine, and hearing the Foley sounds add another layer to the story.
You’d be invited to listen to a commercial that had a fun little jingle that would get stuck in your head. I think back then, being entertained like this was one of life’s simple pleasures. I am so very grateful to my very talented cast and crew for making my vision of this play magically come to life and land on stage.
The crew created a set, found props, costumes, and checked details to the time. The cast emulates those actors of a bygone era, and they recreate the shenanigans that would have gone on in a radio station of the day. I sincerely hope you enjoy the simple pleasure of being part of our 1946 live radio audience.

Cast Biographies
Rob Beeston – Freddie Filmore / Radio Announcer / Man of Many Voices
In his Walterdale debut, Rob is proud to be sending Freddy Fillmore (and others) out on our 1940’s radio broadcast airwaves. Rob has recently appeared as Saunders in Lend Me A Tenor, and as Felix in The Odd Couple, which he also directed. What does Rob want for 1940’s Christmas? He’ll take a double Scotch, neat.
Josh Young – Jake Laurents / George Bailey
Born and raised in North Edmonton, Josh Young, a government public servant moonlighting as an actor, enthusiastically returns to the stage after a long break. With a passion for storytelling and a charismatic stage presence, Josh is thrilled to share dynamic performances and characters with audiences again.
Jamielinn Marvelous – Sally Applewhite / Mary Hatch Bailey
Jamielinn is having a blast with this cast from the past! This is Jamielinn’s third theatre production, her first with Walterdale. She has appeared in film and commercials and models for magazines and runway. Jamielinn hopes you have a wonderful time watching It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.
Lacey Edwards – Lana Sherwood / Woman of Many Voices
This marks Lacey’s Edmonton Theatre debut, and she is thrilled to be part of this wonderful group of people! She is also a recent graduate of Rosebud School of the Arts. For Rosebud Theatre: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Sound of Music, and Chariots of Fire. Love to Travis, and my family.
Ethan Handford – Harry “Jazzbo” Heywood / Man of Many Voices
Ethan Handford can do a sick backflip, but only when you look away. He’s elated to have an outlet for his many voices young and old to shine and bring a little Christmas magic to your December. Was on tour last year with AMTC’s production of Cinderella, he finds no small joy in engaging with another beloved classic.
Liam McKinnon – Andrew “Angel” Anderson / Clarence
Liam McKinnon is an Edmonton Actor & Improviser with Sorry, Not Sorry Improv. He has performed on stage, in film, tv, & animation projects in Calgary & Edmonton & directed at Walterdale Theatre’s 2024 From Cradle to Stage Festival. Liam is also the founder & Game Master for Novice DMing.

Casey Powlik – Stella “the apprentice” / Foley Artist
Always apt to flex her artistic range Casey Powlik is returning for the third time to the Walterdale stage bringing her star power to the role of Stella, the Foley Artist Assistant. Casey is so excited to be back acting doing what she loves. When she’s not acting she’s coaching gymnastics, hiking, reading, and is in the process of writing her own script. She hopes you enjoy the show.
Gary Gilham – Milton the Maestro / Musical Director
Gary Gilham plays the maestro Milton, a 1940’s model of a radio station pianist, with many cheerful jingles, he’s Bedford’s best accompanist. He’s versatile in any style, from melodramas to G&S. At jazz he’s the cat’s pajamas, and what comes next? Just take a guess. He’s heading off to Broadway soon, learning Lerner’s Brigadoon. But for now, he’s heaven-sent, worth every cent for time well spent, no accident he earned his RENT!

A Brief History of Walterdale Theatre and Building
Walterdale is one of the longest running community theatres in Canada.
Walterdale Theatre Associates traces its beginnings to Theatre Associates, who produced their first plays (Lady Audley’s Secret and Out of the Frying Pan) in August 1958, playing in the Jubilee Auditorium social room. Before finding its home in the current Fire Hall, there have been two other Walterdale Theatres. The first was an old school on the Walterdale flats (Kinsmen Fieldhouse area), hence our name. The second was a former service men’s club house, which was later demolished for Kingsway Garden Mall.
Our current building was built in 1910 and was Strathcona Fire Hall #1. In 1912 it was re-numbered Edmonton #6 when the City of Strathcona amalgamated with the City of Edmonton. The bell tower houses the Strathcona “Town Bell”. It is topped by an octagonal belfry, covered by an octagonal roof. The tower was used to dry hoses (by hanging them up) after use. The stable (now set-building workshop) was designed to house nine horses.
The building ceased to be a working Fire Hall in 1954 and was used to store furniture. In 1974 Walterdale Theatre Associates took over the building and lovingly restored it, and converted the inside to a 145-seat theatre. The first play produced in this theatre was What the Butler Saw by Joe Orton, which opened November 12, 1974.
Major renovations were again carried out in 1993 (raising the roof and tying the building together with new beams) and in 2011 (new main floor washrooms, renewing the bricks and other major outside work).
Walterdale continues to keep our building updated and efficient, and have replaced the lighting instruments with LED lights, and the aging second floor furnaces with new high-efficiency units.
