What is your role in this production? I play Lily Byrne, sister of Alfie. She is a devout Catholic who has put her life on hold to look after her unmarried brother. She struggles with aligning her religious beliefs with her desires, especially during a time when women were beginning to be less strict with the idea of no sex before marriage. She has to face some hard truths, and decide where her loyalties will lie, when all is said and done.
What is your background in theatre? With Walterdale? I have a BA in Drama, and have done 5 shows with Walterdale in the last 2 years as either Assistant Director or as an Actor. I have also worked in the past with Horizon Players.
What brought you out for A Man of No Importance? The story was very appealing, and after listening to the score, I thought it would be a great show to go out for.
What has been the most fun thing about doing this show? The most challenging? Most fun? The accent! Everything sounds so great, and though the accent itself isn’t funny, it certainly helps bring out the humor in some of my lines! Most challenging for me are the songs – I described one of them as a “White Irish chick rapping” – it’s not actually rap, but the words have to come out so fast it kind of feels like it!
Two things strike me about this show – bus rides and community theatre – got any crazy bus ride adventures? What about crazy community theatre stories? Hmmm…personally I don’t have any crazy bus stories, but I have a friend who was randomly kissed by a homeless guy on the bus when she was on her way home from school. As for crazy Community Theatre stories – not really. But in community theatre you have to be willing to wear multiple hats. I did a show at Walterdale back in 2001 where I was brought in to be the Sound operator. My Act 2 cues consisted of top of the act sound – out and end of show – sound in. So they put me in costume and I had to go backstage after my Top of Act cue and was the “Pageboy” who assisted with scene changes!
Why do you think audiences should come to this show? I think that the message of this show will resonate with everyone. We all have secrets, all have tough decisions to make. But somehow we all muddle through, and with the help of family and friends we find the humor and fun in life and live it!
