Meet Athena Gordon, Assistant Director for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

profile3What is your role on this production?  I am the Assistant Director. This means that I am responsible for providing support and guidance to our cast, and for helping Adam with whatever he needs to make the show the best it can be.

What is your background in theatre?  I have a B.A. in Drama, and have been doing theatre since I was in Junior High. My first show at Walterdale was back in the fall of 2001 – I was ASM for The Vampyre. I proceeded to do 6 shows in 2 seasons, then took a long break before returning last season, where I was the Maid in Dracula, Assistant Director for Blither Spirit and most recently I was as Panacea in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

Why did you want to be a part of this production? I really enjoyed working with Adam on Forum, so when he asked me to AD this for him, I was really excited at the prospect. Of course, the season hadn’t been announced yet, so he wouldn’t tell me what the show was until I agreed! But it was totally worth it – this is a Once in a Lifetime opportunity for me, and I am grateful to be a part of it.

This is an iconic play – what makes Walterdale’s production stand out? First, this is a brilliant play that everyone should experience live. Second, we have an incredibly talented cast. This can be a daunting show, and it is often described as a downer. But our team has taken the time to find the light moments, and makes the best of them. So when you come, don’t be afraid to laugh if something is funny. Because I guarantee if Adam and I are in the audience, we will be laughing too!

What is your best ‘party gone wrong’ story? That’s for me to know, and you to find out.” – George
