Meet Adam Mazerolle-Kuss – Director of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

999814_10151494138351583_606758033_nWhat is your role on this production? I am the director and choreographer. I guess that means I watch and offer ideas to the actors, the production team and anyone else involved. On the choreographer side I select and teach all the dance steps and movement to the performers. For me, choreographing doesn’t just mean dance, it means I am responsible for the whole feel of the movement in the piece, and there is a lot more than you would think.

What is your background in theatre? I’ve been doing theatre since I was 8 and have worked as an actor across a lot of western Canada. I’ve been very fortunate to work as a performer, director, choreographer and teacher in many great institutions across Alberta and BC. I am also the current Artistic Director at Walterdale and although this show marks my directorial debut at Walterdale I have performed and choreographed on our stage several times.

What brought me to this piece? Well, I performed in Forum in 2001 and fell in love with the show. I have wanted to work on this show again from the production side for a long time. This piece speaks to me on so many levels. It is classic musical comedy, classic physical comedy and a joy to work on and to watch.

Why do you think audiences should come and see this show? I think audiences should come see this show to see the amazing talent of the cast, to hear the wonderful Stephen Sondheim music played by our super orchestra and to see all the great surprises our technical team members have put into the sets, costumes, props and lighting. Forum is a huge show with 18 actors running around like crazy people, who doesn’t want to see that? I laugh constantly in rehearsal and I cannot wait for the public to come see the extreme talent and skill the entire team puts on stage every night.
