We are the Co-Designers for Set, Props, and Special Effects for the show. Not a small job on this one! Hahaha! It has been really great working on this show and we have had an incredible team working with us to help make our designs real!
2. What brought you out for Dracula?
We have both loved the story for as long as we can remember, and the team on this show is so fantastic, so when Darrell approached us to design together we jumped at the chance. Fun Fact: We actually started dating over 12 years ago while watching the movie version of Brahm Stoker’s Dracula! And our first slow dance together was at the end of the movie, to “Love Song for a Vampire” By Annie Lennox. So you could say this story is dear to our hearts… 🙂
3. What is your background in theatre? At Walterdale?
We have both been involved with Walterdale for years, both on and off stage. Our first stage show together was here at the Walterdale in the Rocky Horror Show, with John as Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Kat as one of the Trixies and a Transylvanian Dance Captain. John is a Red Deer College Performing Arts Grad, and Kat has her BFA in Theatre Design from the U of A. We have a little production company called The October People Productions and we specialize in live SFX and makeup, as well as all forms of theatre and film design, video and sound, masks, and anything else we can dig our hands in to!
4. Favorite Vampire movie/play other than this one, and why?
Oohhh so many… Interview with a Vampire was beautifully done. Nosferatu, for the classic contingent. And if Jason Segal actually ever produces the Dracula musical from the end of Forgetting Sarah Marshal, you had better believe we are both auditioning!
5. Favorite Halloween Story/Costume and why?
Oh wow what a loaded question!!!! Halloween is our favorite time of year for sure and we both act like little kids when it comes to decorating, creating costumes, and celebrating the season!
Kat: If I had to pick a few favorite costumes for myself and John I would say John’s Mummy from last year, Hellboy from a few years ago, Headless Horseman, and the Half Man-Half Woman. For myself? Zombie Marilyn Monroe (with exposed brain of course!), Leila from Futurama, Demonic Doll from last year, and when I was 5 I was a Turtle. It was pretty awesome.
John: Probably my favorite of myself was my first trick or treating costume EVER. When I was 4 I was a knight! Complete with a little balaclava with a plastic knights helmet and sword and a charcoal mustache. I have also greatly enjoyed being the mummy, The Joker was pretty cool, and your classic Zombie. Favorites for Kat? She makes a pretty stunning Vampire if I do say so, I liked her beat up roller derby chick quite a bit, and I would have loved to have seen little Kathryn as a Turtle!
6. What are you most looking forward to about this production?
Seeing it with all the elements together. This is such a huge show with so many amazing things happening in it! Everyone in the cast and production team has been working so hard to make the final product the best it can be and I think the end result is going to be really incredible. We can’t wait for the audience to see what we have all created!
